About the BugisBugis is an ethnic group that originates in Sulawesi, Indonesia. To be specific, their homeland is the Lake Tempe and Lake Sidenreng areain the southwest peninsula of Sulawesi.What makes the Bugis people feature so prominently in Malaysia, both East and West, is that a large number of them migrated over since the end of the 17th century. A civil war in Sulawesi created a diaspora of Bugis. Their arrival in Peninsular Malaysia in the 18th and 19th century resulted in some friction with another ground, the Minangkabaus, that came from Sumatra. Eventually the Bugis became the influential ruling power in the sultanates of Johor and Selangor. While the Bugis people have assimilated themselves to the Malay population in West Malaysia, they are still regarded as a separate ethnic group in Sabah, where they form a sizeable minority in several of the towns there. |
