About P. Ramlee

P. Ramlee (1929-1973) is the most famous Malaysian entertainer of all time. He was born Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh at his grandmother's house in Counter Hall, Penang. His father's name is Teuku Nyak Puteh Teuku Karim (1902-1955) while his mother's name is Che Mah Hussein (1904-1967)

The house where P. Ramlee was born has been rebuilt, and is today a showhouse called the P. Ramlee Birth House while Counter Hall was renamed Jalan P. Ramlee in his honour. P. Ramlee was himself posthumously awarded the honorific title Tan Sri in the early 1990s.

While growing up, P. Ramlee attended Francis Light School from 1939 to 1941. During the Japanese Occupation, he attended the Japanese Navy School, Kaigun Gakko. After the war, he went to Penang Free School from 1945 to 1947.

P. Ramlee had 9 award-winning films which are Penarek Becha (1955), Anak-ku Sazali (1956), Hang Tuah (1956), Sumpah Orang Minyak (1958), Nujum Pa' Blalang (1959), Pendekar Bujang Lapok (1959), Ibu Mertua Ku (1962), Love Parade (1963), and Madu Tiga (1964). Among his most famous comedies include Seniman Bujang Lapok (1961), Ali Baba Bujang Lapok (1961), Tiga Abdul (1964), Do Re Mi (1966) and Anak Bapak (1968). He also produced many classic movies including Ibu (1953) and Sergent Hassan (1958).

In addition to producing (as well as acting and directing) movies, P. Ramlee is credited for writing hundreds of songs. Among the most famous include Getaran Jiwa, Di Mana Kan Ku Cari Ganti, traditional songs such as Joget Si Pinang Muda, and humourous songs such as Achi Achi Buka Pintu, Apek dan Marjina, Pok Pok Bujang Lapok, Dengar Ini Cherita and Maafkan Kami.

P. Ramlee passed away at the age of 44 from a heart attack on 29 May 1973, and was buried at the Jalan Ampang Muslim Cemetery, Kuala Lumpur. The house that he was staying in in Setapak is now turned into the P. Ramlee Memorial.
