About PeranakanPeranakan is a term used for people who were born in Peninsular Malaysia, whose ancestors come from other places. The term "Straits born" is often used to describe such people. Although the name Peranakan is frequently used interchangeably to denote the Baba Nyonya, in fact Peranakan covers a broader scope. It applies not only to the ethnic Chinese people born in the British Straits Settlements, but also the comparatively smaller and little-known communities of Indian Hindu Peranakans called Chitty; the Indian Muslim Peranakan called Jawi Peranakan, or Jawi Pekan in Penang and Jawi Kling in Malacca; and finally the Portuguese Eurasian Peranakans called Kristang.While all Peranakans can claim an ancestry that traces back to a foreign land, not all ethnic groups in Malaysia consider themselves Peranakans. For example, not all Chinese born in Malaysia consider themselves Baba Nyonya; only those that have adopted the specific, unique culture and customs of the Baba Nyonya consider themselves that. Today many of the Peranakan groups have been absorb into their respective communities, that their distinctive differrences are no longer that apparent. The Peranakans, who traditionally would be sending their children to English-language schools, have switched to the Chinese medium, resulting in their becoming mainstream Chinese. The Jawi Peranakans are also more likely to call themselves Malay and enjoy all the privileges of being Bumiputra. |
