Sarong is a common piece of clothing for Malaysians. It is worn by both sexes - although the design will differ. While it is usually worn by the Malays, sarong is also common among the Chinese, especially the older generation. The Straits Chinese, or Baba Nyonya, also make it a daily wear at home. Sarong is popularly worn throughout the Malay archipelago. Elsewhere in Asia, other forms of wrap-around clothing is also worn. They may be similar to the sarong, but go by different names, such as the longyi in Burma and dhoti in India.
The sarong is essentially a length of cloth that is wrapped around the waist. Some times, its ends are stitched together to form a tube, but is always much longer than the person's waist, so as to allow it to be wrapped around and folded in.
Among Malay men, the everyday sarong is usually made of cotton, and always with some form of checkered design. It is never plain. It is acceptable clothing to be worn to the mosque, except for festive days, when the men will don the more formal Baju Melayu with samping.
The sarong of the women usually carry floral design or pattern. It may also be in the form of block-printed batik. It is worn as part of the emsemble for Baju Kurung and Kebaya.
